A Thermometer or A Thermostat

This past weekend was the state homeschooling conference. It was an enjoyable couple of days to hear various speakers and to be reminded of a few things.

One question I need to ask myself: Am I a thermostat or a thermometer?

What is the difference? A thermometer reacts to the surrounding temperature. It tells you how hot or cold it is. This is very handy for determining how heavy of a coat to wear, etc.

A thermostat influences the surrounding temperature. It takes a "read" of the temperature and compares it to what is set for comfort. Then it will tell the heating or cooling appliance if it needs to turn on or off.

How does this relate to me as a wife and mother? I have the opportunity to react to those around me or to influence those around me. Do I escalate in frustration when the milk is spilled or do I humbly serve and help clean up? The atmosphere of our home should reflect the love of Christ and as the wife and mother of our family, I must ask myself if I reflect that love. Am I being reactionary or influencing?

We have a few young ladies at church who are graduating and DD#1 wanted to make some cards. The first card has a coloring picture of a little pony which DD colored awhile back and now decided to make into a card. I sponged the edges with various shades of pink (including but not limited to Positively Pink and Pink Passion).

On the second card has hearts (from All Occasions? a retired SU stamp set) stamped all over in Positively Pink - front and back. Then the graduation had (from the same set) in Pink Passion. The sentiment area is from the Be Happy stamp set (also retired) in Pink Passion ink. I wrote the Congrats for DD.
The third card is one I made since DD was having so much fun. The ribbon was in my "stuff" and the paper is from a paper stack. I used the same graduation hat stamp as DD and mounted it on an oval and scalloped oval (using SU punches Oval and Scalloped Oval). Night of Navy ink for the hat.

The last card is an anniversary card with the same color combination as the above graduation card. I used the Heart stamp (Night of Navy Ink) from All Occasions and the flower stamp (Pink Passion Ink) from Be Happy (both retired SU). A button and Offray ribbon from my crafting stash.

Self Portrait

I was downloading photos from our camera a week or so ago and found some interesting photos of a little girl. It seems that she was using the camera to take some self portraits. She had messed with the settings so the photos were really small and not very high quality (notice the smaller photos in the layout), but there were so fun to see. My favorite is the last one on the right. I had to make a page for our budding photographer.

Chapter 20 Canute and the Waves

Canute (Danish King) ruled England after Edmund Ironside died. His nobles would flatter him with much praises. One day he taught the nobles a lesson about their excessive flattery after they had said that all nations would obey him if only Canute said to. He put a chair on the beach when it was low tide. As the tide came in, Canute told the waves, "Go back. I am your master and I command you not to flow over my land." Of course the waves did not obey and the nobles were shown how foolish they really were. Canute told the nobles, "To God alone belongs such power".

Chapter 21 Edward the Confessor

Edward the Confessor was the son of King Ethelred the Unready. Edward fled to Normandy/France with his family when he was a boy and like the Normans better than the English. He became king through the advice of Godwin, Earl of Wessex.

Edward's Norman friends came and visited England and were haughty and rude to the English. Edward sided with his Norman friends when confronted by Godwin, Earl of Wessex. Edward was so angry that he banished Godwin and his sons. Edward then brought more people from France to England and gave many of the nobles places at court. His cousin William of Normandy (The Duke of Normandy) also came for a visit and made Edward promise that he should be the next king. Edward, of course, had no right to do that.

The people longed for Godwin to return -- and he did.

How Edmund Ironside Fought For the Crown

Chapter 19

DS#2 narration: King Edmund desired peace for his country. One day he sent a messenger to Canute (King of the Danes) saying "How about the two kings fight each other and who ever wins will be come king?"

Canute agreed. The two kings fought with spears on their horses then jumped off and fought with their swords fiercely. Edmund was taller and Canute was being beaten. Canute said, "Stop. Why can't we rule together?"

DS #1 narration: The kingdom was divided. King Edmund Ironside ruled the south part and King Canute ruled the north part. There was peace for a short time because Edmund only reigned for seven months (he died). During his short reign, he did more for England than his father Ethelred (who was cowardly and weak) did in several years.

Kate Shelley Museum

Field Trip Day!!!!

We went to the Kate Shelley Museum in Moingona. It was a beautiful fall day so we all enjoyed some outside time hiking what used to be the railroad trail as well as a picnic at the park.

First, a few picture books that we read a couple of years ago about Kate Shelley:

A few interesting facts that we did not know before the field trip. Moingona had a population of about 1,000 to 1,500 in 1880's. There are currently about 75 people that live in this little "village". Also, the railroad followed the lay of the land. Between Boone and Moingona there were around 33 bridges (mostly made of rocks to cross all the creeks, etc.), and between Moingona and Ogden there were 55 bridges. So for a distance of about 15 - 20 miles (railroad was not in a straight line), there were 88 bridges that had to be maintained.

DS#3 interesting fact to remember was that Ms. Shelley crawled over the Des Moines River Bridge with one hand on the rail and the other hand pulling her along. Her lantern had broken and she could only see by the lightening flashes. There were also spikes on the ties to discourage people from crossing the railroad bridge.

She was a very brave young woman. The bridge that she crawled over was burned in the late 1890's and replaced. When the Kate Shelley High Memoral Bridge was built in the 1920's, the railroad no longer regularly came through Moingona.

In the 1930's, the bridge over the Des Moines River where Kate Shelley crossed over, was removed. Today, you can see the embankment and the pilings. The railroad tracks are gone and there is now a path to the river where the tracks were.

We also saw a depot (the original one burnt down due to arson in the late 1800s or 1900s -- the station agent was trying to cover up his embezzlement of $3.50) with the passengar waiting room, the ticket office and the baggage area. The depot that is in Moingona was originally in Beaver, IA. The baggage room had various railroad artifacts as well as a minature steam engine.

The Founding of the Round Table.

Why a round table? DS#1 - There was not a high or low end.

Mom's narration: The knights had been fighting for the best seats as a regular table. The seats at the top of the table were considered for the more honorable and the seats at the bottom of the table were the less honorable. King Arthur was saddened by the fighting of his knights and thought how can my kingdom have peace when my knights were fighting about where to sit. Merlin suggested a round table where there was not a top or bottom.

A Busy Time

That's what happens around here on a frequent basis. Since my last post, I had a birthday, celebrated the birth of our Savior - Jesus Christ, took a family vacation to visit family in Texas, spent a day in Springfield, MO on the way back, had loads of vacation laundry to catch up on, had a stomach virus run through the family (which added to the laundry) two times, DH had his birthday, said good-bye to our pastor & his wife, paid bills, prepared meals to nourish the family, designed a closet for the boys, had snow and snowed-in days, but most of all -- Loved my Saviour, my husband, and my kids.

I didn't scrap much last month. But had some time last week. I will some of those over the next few days.

Tricycle

When I first posted this, blogger stalled after the photos was uploaded so I couldn't add any info. This is DD earlier this summer. She was playing outside and trying to ride her big brother's tricycle. I just had fun taking her photo. With the main photo I used curves to give it a bit more punch.

Shoes - Mother and Daughter

DD and I were sitting on the front porch one afternoon, watching the boys. I had the camera and took a photo of our feet. She had her pretty shoes on. DD really likes the flowers -- so girly!

Journaling reads: Sitting on the front porch with each other and enjoying each other’s company. I took this photo to remind us of the time when you are little and can sit in my lap easily. You are a little girl that enjoys her pretty shoes and enjoys her dresses, yet runs and keeps up with her brothers as best as she can. May the Lord contniue to bless you all your days!

Cowboy Boots and Boys

I started this post a number of days ago, but Blogger would not let me add photos. So I saved it as a draft and am finally able to post the photos. These are of DS #2 ...although each of our sons could well be in the photos! They all love the cowboy boots!

Journaling reads: Cowboy boots and little boys....they sure seem inseparable in our family. The first pair of cowboy boots were a hand-me-down to Caleb from friends, then we found the next pair at a Goodwill in Texas while visiting Grandma & Grandpa. A really small pair was found in Oklahoma at a Salvation Army Thrift Store. Peter wore those until they were too small; we are now saving them for Sarah. The pair that you have on were a find at a garage sale. The two other larger pairs of boots have been worn out to an almost unwearable state with holes aplenty and stitching broken. Cowboy boots are a wonderful way to enter the realm of imagination and boyhood!

I found the quote when reading a small book that I picked up this summer. We sure love cowboy boots...too bad he wasn't wearing his cowboy hat at the same time....

Long Time No Blog...

It's been a long time since I posted here. We are in the midst of some repainting and changing things around at our home. So my computer time has been a bit more limited and blogging has gone by the wayside. But I have scrapped. So now to share my latest creations.

Journaling reads: A little girl without much hair what a blessing! You are four months old and the joy of your mother and daddy and brothers (and they are your joy)! In fact, Joy is your middle name. You have found your fingers and toes and you are smiling and loving life! Your eyes seem to have turned brown, just like your oldest brother Caleb’s. May you continue to grow in wisdom and stature.

Critical Mass

I found the effer dare blog earlier this week and was inspired by Dare #31. Dare #31 -- using a Book Title. I used the book Critical Mass (just because it was how I described DD's amount of hair).

Journaling reads: June 2006 - 20 months old and you finally have a critical mass of hair....meaning that you finally have enough hair to notice. While it is still too short to need a barette or pony tail holder, we have noticed that you might have some curls, especially in the back where it is longer. We were not concerned about the little amount of hair as your mom did not have much hair when she was your age (and hers was even harder to see being blond), and Mama is not lacking in that department now.

A Little Smile & Music Video

Have you ever wanted to be on a Creative Team?

Natural Designs in Scrapbooking urgently needs to fill a number of spots on the Natural Designs Creative Team, so if you are a creative scrapper we want to hear from you!!!

As a member of the Natural Designs (NDISB) Creative Team you will be asked to:

Create a minimum of one layout with each product provided and post it in the NDISB Gallery as well as three other nominated major online galleries.
Help with promotions and include blinkies & links in posts (where allowed) about upcoming events, sales, new product releases, sampler packs & specials.
Participate in the NDISB community.

Sunshine Walk

Falling Asleep in Grandpa's Arms

This is a LO that I finished over a week ago, but forgot to post. (We are in the midst of getting our house ready to sell etc.). My kiddos really enjoy being read to and will conscript any willing party! So when G&G were here, they requested all their books (okay..not all) be read to them.

Journaling reads: During Grandma & Grandpa’s recent visit, Caleb, Joshua & Peter often requested Grandpa (& Grandma) to read to them. This afternoon, Grandpa started reading to Caleb & Joshua, but Peter joined in quickly. For awhile all the boys were paying attention, but soon Peter’s head started bobbing and weaving. Finally, he fell asleep in Grandpa’s arms.

In health and in sickness

The two youngest have had some sort of stomach/GI virus. DS#3 woke DH & I up at 4:30 one morning with some emesis, later dry heaves, and then later that day had a fever. He slept a lot for almost 2 days and then slowly recovered. Then DD had the same a couple of days later. So the washer and dryer got some extra work as did Mom and Dad. All seem to be well now. DS #2 had his 6th birthday last week; he opened his presents but we didn't have cake for a couple of days since that is when DS#3 was sick.

Any way, I did do some layouts. This first one is from just over 1 year ago. DH took this photo of three of our blessings with myself. I used the faux lomo effect tutorial by Anita Stergiou once again (it is so much fun to play with).

Candy Turkeys

I just downloaded these photos (from November 2005) from our older (2 MP) camera (so the quality was not as good -- and it has an unrealiable flash). But the candy turkeys were so cute! They had so much fun making them! I used my program to lighten them up...they were still a bit blurry, but hopefully you can see the cuteness!

Just before Thanksgiving, we got together with our friends the XXXX for a little history lesson and a craft. We sharpened sticks to make wood nibs, made ink from black raspberries, and created Thanksgiving cards. But the most FUN craft was making candy turkeys. Everyone was so creative and looked forward to eating the turkeys (after they were shown to the dads)

Monkey Man

While our whole family went on this trip and enjoyed the zoo, I decided to focus on DS#1 in this 2 page LO. The photo for the 2nd page is one of my favorites! It really shows alot about my oldest monkey man. The zoo had a suspension bridge with this huge cable. He decided to hang from the cable and who could resist taking a photo. Evidently not me. LOL

All the boys wore yellow shirts -- easier to keep track of them. We enjoyed seeing the zoo so much that we stopped there on our way to Oklahome as well as on the way back from Oklahoma. Of course having a zoo pass helps as well.

Blue Sarah
The photo that I used in this LO is the one that catapaulted me into digital scrapbooking. I did this layout a number of months ago during a chat at Digital Scrapbook Place. We were scraplifting the LO Blue Lady by one of the members there (sorry, I can't remember all those details). I had finally figured out how to use brushes for this LO and had fun!

She was 6 months old and riding in the backpack carrier while our family was on a Sunday afternoon walk. My DH took our photo; I just love her expression and the little tilt of her head.

Hiking:
The second layout I'm sharing is one of our family. I did this LO for a sketch and color challenge at 3 Scrapateers. We really enjoy hiking at a nearby state park. On this LO I really wanted to make sure I journaled. So here goes:

Journaling reads:
Another afternoon/evening of hiking and spending time together at one of our favorite places. We are very blessed to have such a wonderful state park so close to us! It is only about 10-15 minutes from our home - give or take. We have taken many different trails at the park, some are more off the beaten path than others. One of favorite places to go is a well beaten path, but not an official path -- the overlook rock (not an official name but our name for it). This is part of the bluff that overlooks the Des Moines River. The path to the bluff is well used; and as the photo tells, there are not safety rails on the bluff.. It is about 30-40 feet above the river and has a great view of the river. We have also had exciting adventures taking the less traveled path from the bluff; muddy trails, slippery paths and great fun have abounded. Usually Mom carries Sarah in the backpack (as she is not walking) and everyone else uses their own feet. If Peter gets tired, he either rides on Daddy’s back or Daddy’s shoulders. Caleb and Joshua usually find a walking stick or sword or spear
or javelin to be used while hiking. This day Joshua was also wearing his Robin Hood hat and his green shirt to complete the outfit. Caleb enjoys sitting at the edge of the bluff and looking over the edge. Joshua is more like his Mother and stays farther from the edge, but Peter will probably be more like Caleb and his Daddy, although we don’t let him get that close yet. Sarah enjoys riding in the backpack; she likes to see where she is going. She has the cutest denim hat that she wears to avoid a sunburn on her head; her hair is still very short and fine. All in all a wonderful time spending time together and enjoying God’s creation.

Here is my most recent layout of my DD. These pictures are a year old...And she still doesn't have much hair. I just love the love that is evident in her eyes in the bottom photo. She is looking at her Daddy. And the hood just makes her eyes stand out!

Journaling reads:
At 3 1/2 months, you still don't have much hair so this little jacket with its hood is just perfect for you. Your eyes are so bright and striking -- dark brown eyes. But the one thing that is noticed most of all about you at this age is the love that can be seen in your eyes. In these photos you are looking at Daddy with such love and affection. When Daddy comes home from work, you can hardly contain yourself until he picks you up and loves on you.
